Couple of things: Somewhat common is a ganglion cyst (small collection of concentrated joint fluid). Gouty tophus, or maybe a bone/cartilage cyst, or bone spur can form "nodules" on the thumb area. If it is bothersome to you, i suggest getting evaluated.

Trigger finger: Typically has a locking or clicking tendon, other things can click in a finger or thumb such as a joint, a tendon snapping over a bone spur , other areas of tendon irritation in the wrist, even a cyst or tumor on a tendon or just a joint click from. Normal motion but yes it sounds like the description you give is that of a trigger thumb. Many get permanent  relief from corticosteroid injection.

This causes clicking or locking on attempted thumb motion. The motion of the ip joint is primarily affected. This is usually an overuse syndrome. Treatment consists of steroid injection , splinting, or surgery to release pulley.

Depends on injury: If you injured your thumb you should be evaluated by a physician. Xrays should be ordered to rule out a fracture. If it is a dislocation then wearing a splint will be necessary. If it is a sprain it depends which ligament is sprained or torn because sometimes surgery is required. Better to get evaluated by an md for hand injuries rather than just wait to see if it heals on its own.
