Dr. needs to check: Different people describe their headaches in different ways, so a conversation and exam with the doctor is needed. One possibility is occipital neuralgia, a distinct type of headache with piercing, throbbing, or electric-shock-like chronic pain in the upper neck, the back of the head, and behind the ears, usually on one side of the head. There are also other causes of throbbing headaches.

Throbbing in occiput: Could be nerve irritation cervicaldynia, or occipital neuralgia. Rarely vascular. Do not worry . if not allergic try motrin. Consider c spine xray Would f/u w doc urgent  care .

Could be anything: Could be any reason...But it is not uncommon for people to experience muscle aches when they are dealing with a viral infection very to similar to the body aches of the flu. Also when people are ill, they tend not to sleep in a normal comfortable position. It could also be stress associated with feeling ill. If it worsen or causes significant concern, see your primary care md.

See a doctor: For a physical exam. The lump may just be inflamed portion of a muscle that you've subjected to a constant strain with poor posture or it could be something very different. Impossible to tell.

Occipital neuralgia: Occipital neuralgia involves the greater and lesser occipital nerves located in the back of the scalp and can produce neck pain as well as headache. Moist heat, NSAIDs OTC and passive stretching exercises will resolve the condition in 7-10 days.

Occipital neuralgia: Occipital nerves originate from the upper cervical nerve roots, course up the neck muscles, and exit near the base of the skull.

Possible sinusitis: This can be due to an infection in the sphenoid sinus which is in back of the skull. If you've had a recent upper respiratory infection, this would be a likely cause of the headache. Discuss this with your physician who will order the appropriate tests and treatment as well as refer you to an otolaryngologist or neurologist depending on his/her assessment. In the meantime, stop smoking.
