Not too old: Tonsillitis is certainly not a fun infection to deal with.  Neither is tonsil surgery, but you might have fewer throat issues after surgery.  Given the frequency and length of time you have been dealing with this, you are a candidate to consider surgery as an option.  You need to expect the worst sore throat of your life for 2 weeks. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help decrease pain.

Mono Infection: Mono, also infectious mononcleosis, is caused by the virus, epstein barr. It causes a prolonged sore throat, excessive malaise, swollen lymph glands, and may cause an enlargement of the liver and spleen. There is no medication that specifically treats this common viral infection, but symptoms can be helped with tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen, warm salt water gargles and tincture of time - steroids maybe.

Get seen: If you have a throat infection serious enough for you to write healthtap, a physician should look at it and decide whether it should be treated as strep throat (which is very dangerous and has no home cure), or one of the infectious mononucleosis syndromes (epstein-barr is best known, but the one to rule out is acute HIV infection.)  for pain relief, drug stores offer topical anesthetics.

See doctor...: If you think your inhaler is worsening and/or causing a throat infection, you need to see your doctor so this can be diagnosed and treated. If this is indeed the case, your inhalers may need to be adjusted. If you are using a steroid inhaler, you should use a spacer device and rinse and spit after each and every dose. This can decrease your infection rate!
