: Swelling and itching of hands warrant an urgent visit to a dermatologist, an Urgent Care facility, one's physician, or a hospital Emergency Department.  The task is to determine the underlying cause of these symptoms.  Causes include contact substances inciting an allergic skin response, a systemic allergy to some ingested substance, a food allergy, a systemic disease, or some other cause.

Threadworms (UK): Known as pinworms in the us. Pinworm infections are rarely spread through the use of swimming pools (unless heavly infested with e. Vermicularis). Re-infection rate is high & all close contacts should be simultaneously treated. Frequent hand washing and clipping the nails, as well as washing of bedding and clothing will help minimize rate of re-infection.

Secondary med: Current reccomendations list Praziquantel at 5-10 mg/kg x 1 dose as the preferred agent for tapeworm due to effectiveness & simplicity of treatment. Albendazole at a dose of 15mg/kg divided 2x/day for 1-6 mo may be effective but is certainly a harder rx to complete. See harriet lane handbook of pediatric antimicrobial therapy.

Chewables/liquids: There are liquid over the counter preparations for this problem under several names. Some of the prescription meds also come in chewables, since most affected patients are kids.

Pinworms: You touch and then swallow tiny worm eggs which hatch in the gut. Female worms emerge around the anus (and vagina in females)  at night to lay more eggs and secrete mucus that makes you scratch the area. The eggs stick to your fingers or nails and then they can be transferred anywhere.  There's a lot more to a cure than just the drug, like strict hygiene and treating family members as well.

the last 2 days i found one of my long hairs mixed in 2yo stool. very long, 6in.could it be a threadworm?i just don't know how it got there. dangerous?

2 year old: Two year old children have a tendency to put everything in their mouths. Chance are he found a loose hair on the floor and ingested it. Threadworms would be much smaller in size.

if i thought i saw a threadworm in poop,would it pull out easily with a tweezer or would it just break apart? would there be only one or 2 or would there be more? could you get these worms if no one left home for several months? no kids/pets in home?

: Most of these finds are undigested debris from food/salads/etc. Threadworms are rarely found in adults but may be as transient as any germs in the poop. There presence has minimal significance. The situation where treatment/investigation would be needed would be symptomatic anal itching.

after wk of abdo discomfort, diarrohea i found threadworm in poo. stool results normal? took worm med yesterday and symptoms persist? advice.

See a GI doctor: If your symptoms do not clear you should be seen and fully evaluated by a gastroenterologist. Most cases of gastroenteritis are viral and should clear spontaneously. If not, it may require a detailed assessment.
