it feels like i have a deep bruise in my thigh. i am a runner, what can i do i am in so much pain. should i stop running?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you should: If  you are in that much pain, stop it and see your doc. It is not normal to have that much pain from running, unless you injured yourself some other way besides running.
It could be bursitis, which is not dangerous and can be easily diagnosed, but you should definately check with your doc.
Just remember, you can always run again once you know that nothing bad is happening in there.

Strain: It could be muscular,strain, sprain or stress fracture. You need to see a physician for evaluation and treatment. Good Luck

Hamstrings: Trial of pt and non steroidal anti inflammatory agents would be of help for hamstring pull along with rest and gradual increase in exercise and stretching . Consider further work up if no response.

No: The most common complication of prolonged flights, aside from uri's, is deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower extremity from prolonged immobility of limbs and sitting in cramped seats for long periods. Moving legs constricts veins and helps flow, preventing dvt. Splinting the leg prevents doing the things that can prevent dvt. Drink lots of water, move legs frequently, do not fly splinted.

Yes: unfortunately shin splints are difficult to "cure". Reduce running distance and also avoid running hills. Going up and down really applies a lot of pressure on the shins and increases the shin splints occurrence.  Also see a podiatrist that can make you orthotic that will help you with running and shin splits.

Let me advice you: Tenderness, soreness or pain along the inner part of your lower leg, mild swelling in your lower leg, at first, the pain may stop when you stop running or exercising. Eventually, however, the pain may be continuous.When get worse check with your doctor.

hello. my 10 year old son had an x-ray today and was diagnosed with a chipped tibia. although the chip is very small, shouldn't they splint his leg?

Tibia: is a weight bearing bone
if he can walk it does not seem to be badly broken
and it should heal in 3 vweks\if swelling is getting wor if more symptoms he needs to be rechecked by the orthopedics doctor

Plastic bag: Try placing your leg in a plastic trash bag secured at the top with one or two good rubber bands. Dry off the top of the bag before you release the rubber bands.

The cause : and treatment of MEDIAL TIBIAL PAIN SYNDROME ("shin splints') is still not completely understood but it is generally associated with prolonged running...if the pain you are having is NOT ...you have another reason for the pain...A visit to an Orthopedic specialist is suggested!

Stress fracture: If it is not shin splints, you can have a stress fracture in your tibia bone.  This is less common than shin splints, but is possible.  It is diagnosed with an xray sometimes, but sometimes you need an MRI to see it.
