i keep waking up with a thick white layer on my tongue that i was told is not thrush. what could it be then?

It can dehydrate if you're a mouth breather while sleeping.It can also trap milk solids and other food debris.It tends to turn a pale grayish white & shed periodically, pushed up by pinker younger tissue.

the far back of my tongue is white and it doesn't go away when i scrape it it isn't thick just a very thin layer and has been there for ~3 months?

Causes of a tongue that looks white include: lichen planus (responds to steroids), white sponge nevus (familial, benign, permanent), smoker's leukoplakia (2% risk of cancer, needs biopsy), hairy leukoplakia (due to epsteinbarr virus), warts (due to papillomavirus), "thrush" (rx antifungals).

Dentist?: Have you seen a dentist and explained the problem to your dentist who can actually examine you, along with taking a complete dental and medical history?  That's what i would recommend and the best way to diagnose your problem and suggest a remedy.

Nonspecific: Tongue coating is very nonspecific and sometimes related to digestive issues, but on many occasions there  is no pathology. I wouldn't be concerned about it if you have no symptoms. Use your toothbrush to wipe it away.  Your dentist may have more advice for you.
