i stop breathing for periods of time at night. i have gerd and i've often have at least 1 nostril blocked. thick mucus in throat. are these connected?

Stop breathing: Sleep apnea. need polysomnogram. See ENT for laryngeal endoscopy and nasal exam.

getting  thick mucus in throat. dr put me on antibiotics, if not work then steroids. any other suggestions. don't see how steroids are going to help.

Thick mucus: Try drinking 2+ quarts of water/day. Do not smoke, no alcohol. Suck on lozenges to stimulate salivary glands. try Humibid

Listen to OB: The medications used for the treatment of GERD are not ideally safe in pregnancy (e.g. safety of these drugs has not been studied for pregnant women. )

recently quit smoking after 20 years of half-full pack a day. have chronic sinus congestion with thick/excessive mucus in throat. also have a dry cough occasionally and sometimes wheezing associated with laying down in bed mostly. recent normal pft?

Give it time: Congratulations on stopping smoking; you have greatly improved your chance of a long healthy life. You don't say what you mean by "recently". However, smokers cough and other consequences of smoking may take take months  or years to improve after stopping. And it sounds like you might have an allergic component, i.e. asthma plus allergic sinusitis. Keep working with your doctor. Good luck!

See Your M.D.: There's some over-the-counter decongestants but you rather see your doctor especially if you present an elevation in body temperature that is not within normal limits.

Allergies: Previous discussion suggested allergies with post nasal drip many excellent antihistamines otc. Loratadine 10 mg daily good start. No improvement after 1 month may need to see physician.

Yes : Antihistamines do thicken mucus. Thick post nasal drip may not always be allergies. It could be chronic non-allergic rhinitis which is common as people get older. It could be dryness from not enough fluids, medication side effects, irritation from environmental factors(dry air),  and other issues. Try drinking more water, have humidifier in bedroom, use nasal saline rinses, and use guaifenesin.

any idea what causes thick mucus in my throat causing me  to clear my throat constantly iv'e had this problem since my teens i'm now 63?

PND Likely: Assuming you are a non-smoker and you do not have an obstructive pulmonary disease and/or are not referring to sputum...More than likely pnd- post nasal drip (allergies or anatomic issue with your septum or sinuses).
