Rest, splint: Unusual orthopedic question as isolated thenar muscle injuries are unusual.If that is really your diagnosis ( not a hook of hamate fracture or other) than my treatment would be a removable thumb spica splint, nsaids and rest from further injury.If pain continued after2-3 wks and mechanism of injury warranted it, repeat x-rays ( including carpal tunnel view) or consider further radiologic studies.

If sudden go to ER: There are many possible causes, such as a pinched nerve or multiple sclerosis or Lyme Disease, but if this has just suddenly happened and has not before then PLEASE GO TO THE ER RIGHT NOW as it could be caused by a stroke and that needs immediate treatment. If this comes and goes and/or has been happening for awhile then see your family doctor and/or a neurologist in the near future.
