Only once: A person can only get mumps once. One of the two diagnoses was  inaccurate (or possibly both). Periauricular lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes around the ear) may represent a reaction to potential infection ("reactive lymph nodes") and is good - nature working for your benefit.

Lymph node: It could be a lymph node, cyst, infection, abscess or fatty tissue. You should see a doctor to have it diagnosed and treated.

These lymph nodes: are located behind your external ear.  Lymph node enlargement is caused most commonly by infection or inflammatory process, but rarely it can mean malignancy.  If it is 1cm, it is probably not worrisome for neoplasm.  Show it to your doctor just to be sure.

First thought benign: My first thought on this description is a benign blue nevus, an distinctive round to oval spot that firm, grey  blue to blue black & can occur anywhere on the body. They usually have a well defined border  & appear gradually in a patient. It could be something else & the dermatologist can decide if special tests are needed to decide what it is.
