Humans are human...: Sometimes things just happen. Other times people make mistakes. Some possibilities: tubes were not filled to the required amount, blood unintentionally clotted in the tubes, tubes got lost, wrong tubes were used, tubes were not processed within the required time frame, tubes were kept at the wrong temperature, etc...   The lab staff usually takes the blood samples again at no additional charge.

Good!: The days of glass slides and hairspray are long gone!   the newer liquid based pap tests are much more accurate and allow for hpv cotesting.  Most women with a history of normal pap testing only need screening once every 3 years depending on risk factors.

Variable: Pap screen is very reliable so it is unlikely to go from normal to cancer in one yr without  going through precancerous stages that are easily diagnosed on Pap. There are many reasons for spotting in a young woman; cancer is the last to worry about.

: The reasons HPV sometimes reactivates are not known. This is a normal event and nothing to be worried about. It doesn't indicate any sort of health problem, and as long as HPV testing returns to negative, there is no risk of cancer or other significant health problem.
