Many possibilities: A simple tummy ache with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, whether at home or traveling, may be from a virus infection, bacteria infection, or contaminated food. A normal person, not pregnant, not on medications, usually recovers easily. Taking a Pedialyte popsicle or 2-3 oz of Pedialyte hourly, plus drinking/eating little else, may settle things down. Otherwise, a Dr. should evaluate.

when i cough the left side of my stomach hurts, it's just one spot and i'm not sure if it's my kidney. it's towards the front rather than the sides.

Does not sound: like a kidney problem, if you have noticed any other symptoms such as change in color of urine.  Rather it sounds more like muscle pain.  Try otc analgesics such as ibuprofen or naproxen, and see a doctor if pain persists.

See below: It is probably not your stomach but the muscles of your ribcage, or the lining of your lung. Reasons range from the mundane such as a pulled muscle by trauma or coughing, through pleurisy or pneumonia, to very serious problems such as pneumothorax or pulmonary embolism. Get yourself checked.

Time to get help...: Abdominal pain is never normal, &amp; significant pain as you report even less so.  Lots of things cause left sidedabdominal pain--see earlier healthtap answers please.  When/if pain is as severe as you describe, don't delay in seeking evaluation or getting treatment.

Perhaps: If you have not had a period for 7 months, you absolutely should take a pregnancy test.  Other reasons for left lower quadrant pain could be ovulation, constipation, infection or musculoskeletal.  If the pain has been severe or persistent, you should see your doctor.

Options: There are multiple options for painful periods. Hormonal treatments such as birth control pills, Progesterone treatments and the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud are effective treatments that will help many people. There is also a drug called Lysteda that contains no hormones which will help others. Over the counter Ibuprofen is often used for menstrual cramps and pain.

May be GYN related: Most frequently left lower quadrant abdominal pain in a young female is caused by gyn related issues (e.g. Ruptured ovarian cyst). Less commonly, at this age, a condition called diverticulitis (inflammation of colon diverticula) may cause similar pain. Rarely appendicitis may present with pain on the left side instead of the right. Other causes are related to urinary tract.

If your lower abdomen hurts, that could be your skin, muscles, bladder, uterus, or intestines. If the upper part of your abdomen hurts, it could be acid reflux, pancreatitis, or other problems. See a doctor for an assessment.

Get examined: This is something that you will need to examined to discern what it is. It could be diverticulitis, gas or nothing.
