i can't go jogging because it causes my knees to swell. are there any exercise equipment like an exercise ball which could help?

Need orthopedist: Swelling of the knee joint should be taken seriously. Many joint derangements could be the cause. Stop jogging until your doctor or orthopedist can give you answers as to why swelling is occurring.

Closed chain: So not knowing what type of knee injury you have this will be a bit generic.  Usually for knee injuries i would recommend what is called closed chain exercises, which are any exercises in which the sole of the foot contacts the ground or a platform.  This would include squats, leg press, cycling, elliptical trainer, calf raises.  And not isolation exercises such as quad extension/hamstring curls.

I'm not: familiar with those machines, but walking at different speeds and slopes if available would be fine

Pes Bursitis: Pes anserine bursitis can be treated like most sports injuries: Rest, ice, NSAIDs. Physical therapy can help as can a visit to your orthopaedic surgeon to ensure the correct diagnosis is made. Make sure that you stretch before exercise and warm up, avoid hill running and stair climbing if possible as you improve you can return to activity. Consult ur doctor: P90x is meant for people that are already fit and healthy. If you have knee pain it might benefit from strengthening exercises but should be done only after your doctor clears you to do so and sometimes under the direction of a physical therapist. Be careful! overdoing it may further injure you. Check with you doctor or orthopedist first.

Non or low impact.: "bad back and knees" is pretty nonspecific, but you should focus on achieving & maintaining appropriate weight for your height and general fitness.  Your knees absorb 40% of your weight on impact, so favor them with low or no impact exercises like swimming, cycling, walking, and low impact aerobics.  For your back, work the "core" muscles in your back and abs. A "bridge" is a classic sore exercise.

Knee pain: In a 24 year old is likely to be a benign condition such as chondromalacea patella or patella femoral syndrome. Exercise is good.

Accepted Answer

Not good: Trampoline exercises are not good if you already have problems with the knees.  Any exercise that increases pressure on these joints should be reduced.   Swimming, bicycling, elliptical machine and walking are gentle on the knees.
