It's a good screen: Yes, a CBC is an excellent screen to see if you have any abnormalities in your red or white blood cells.  However, you can actually save money if you have a good primary care physician who will listen to your concerns and order the appropriate tests based on your symptoms, and give suggestions on staying healthy.  If you are having night sweats and wt loss it could also be due to hyperthyroidism.C.

Diagnosis needed: Mom is thinking rationally – she wants a DIAGNOSIS.  Even if this is not leukemia, you need a diagnosis.  Headaches and lethargy are very serious signs, and a definite diagnosis must be established ASAP.

CBCj, flow cytometry: Leukemia is suspected when abnormal cells our found in the blood, or when blood counts are very low.  The first test is the CBC (complete blood count).  If abnormal cells are in the blood, they can be identified by flow cytometry, which analyzes compounds on the surface of blood cells.  The definitive test otherwise is a bone marrow aspirate and biopsy, usually taken from the pelvic bone.
