Vikane: Vikane exposure isn't much better for elderly cardiopulmonary patients than it is for termites. Exposure to the agent by such patients should be avoided. It isn't something normal folks want to be exposed to either.

While in Use: Of course it's dangerous while it's actively being deployed.  It's a mild respiratory irritant and the gas itself is, in high concentration, fatal.  Moral of the story:  we do not stay in houses with fumigation tents over them.

DEET & Picardin: Effective insect control. Safe & effective: 30%deet, preferably in the ultra frormulation and 20% picardin are proven effective.Of course, if you are in an area with malria you will need to add medication to prevent malaria too.   You can make your clothes insect repellent too by washing in permthrin. Other unproven insect repellents are not recommended.

Yes, sort of.: There are many websites devoted to this. Common natural repellants are lemon eucalyptus oil, citronella, thyme, fennel, clove oil, b-1 vitamins and others.  I personally find that deet, common to most commerical repellants, works better, but some people have concerns about this chemical.

Insect bites: Insect bites treat with caladryl lotion, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) orally, and Hydrocortisone cream - and ice.

Accepted Answer

Depends: It depends on where you live, but in general, early spring or late spring, there will always be some kind of critter that wants to bite you or suck your blood.  Wear appropriate clothing, use repellants, do visual inspections for crawlies, and go live life.  Being active and exploring the outdoors will be more beneficial than saying locked up indoors.

Get DEET: Most things listed as repellent have little or no effect.  DEET is the most effective by far.  Other substances may act as attractant at times.

Abscess: An insect bite can become secondarily infected causing an abscess. It does not typically cause a cyst.

Don't know what: Insect bit you but a bed bug  can leave telltale sign of a  linear track of lesions from sequential feedings – doesn't always occur.
