Tetanus toxoid: If you received this you may have a systemic reaction to the vaccine in the form of low grade temp elevation, but would not simply assume this is related to the vaccine because the two things occurred in the same time period. They may be temporally but not causally related and if the symptoms persist would see a doctor.

my boy is 6 and 11 mnths. a bog bit him today on his arm. he had a tentanus injection in january this year. should he get another shot?

Accepted Answer

No need for a shot.: There is no need for a shot based on a bug bite. My concern would be if the bug may have injected something that may be harmful to your son. I hope not, because quite often the body is able to mount a reaction to contain anything if injected. If it itches get something to rub on to reduce chances of scratching that may increase chances of infection from the fingers.

got bit by house cat, only had 3 tetanus shots as a child. had a tetanus shot 14 hours after the bite. can i still get tetanus or am i safe now?

Most likely: You are most likely protected from tetanus. However, watch the wound closely. Cat and dog bites are prone to develop infection. Also has the cat had rabies shots? If not the animal needs to be observed for 10 days to make sure it's not infected. If you cannot find the cat notify your physician to assess your risk for rabies.

got bit by doberman. should i get anti tetanus, anti rabies shots?

Accepted Answer

Probably neither: If your tetanus shot is current, i.e., last booster within 5 years, another shot may not be needed.  Domestic dogs are generally not considered rabid.

Tetanus: You can get a shout within 72 hours of bite. However, sooner the better.

Cat scratch: The bigger concern is cat scratch fever. If you should start running an unexplained fever or swollen lymph glands see your doctor or go yo the er immediately.

Tetanus: if you have received tetanus shot within the last 5 years, you should be ok. If you haven't, you should receive it now

: The most common concern after a human bite is infection of the wound. If you are concerned about an infection you should seek medical care. If it has been more than 5 years since your tetanus booster you follow up for a tetanus booster.

Surveillance: It is important to watch wound and look for signs of infection. If it gets hot, swollen, have pus or hurts even more, you should get attention by your doctor promptly. Ask to the dog owner if it is vaccinated against rabies, if not, you should ask to your doctor and local services for the best protocol that must be applied in your case.

Your call: Any break in the skin can allow germs &amp;  tetanus spores to enter. Effective cleaning &amp; sanitizing may avoid both. If it has been over10 yrs since your last tetanus booster this would be an opportunity to get one &amp; get now + 10 yrs worth of protection. Monitor the site for redness &amp; swelling. If infection gets into deep spaces of the hands it can eventually lead to surgery &amp; hospital based care.
