Depends where: While a lymph node can be tender and probably represents an associated inflammatory process, the origin of the problem depends on where in the rt. neck the node is.   In  region of the digastric, it can arise in the  hypopharynx or larynx.  In  the mid neck it can come from piriform sinus or thyroid.  In  supraclavicular area the problem may be pulmonary in origin.  Biopsy for path is essential.

hi can you please help. my hudband suffers with inflamed vein/artery on right side of neck, its painful when swollen for maybe few hours and tender after, but he feels very unwell in himself after this happens?

Need exam ASAP!: There are a number of possible causes for these symptoms. It's best that you see a physician right away to see if there is an infection or other condition present.

FineNeedle aspiratio: 4-7 % thyroid nodules can be cancerous. What was your TSH levels. Was a fine needle aspiration (FNA) ever performed on this nodule? If TSH IS NORMAL get FNA!  If TSH lower than normal get Nuclear Thyroid Scan. If scan shows non functioning nodule...then get FNA. If FUNCTIONING NODULE check FT4 and T3 (liothyronine) levels. Good luck.

See your doctor: Lumps in the neck can be caused by a number of things. They range from benign (like lymph nodes responding to an infection, cysts, or non-cancerous tumors) to serious things like cancer. You should see your doctor for an exam. Masses in the neck (especially in someone who uses tobacco) that don't go away need to be evaluated by an ENT doctor.

Neck nodes: A CBC blood test is important and an exam by a doctor in person. Many times, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck can be responding to an infection in the throat, sinus or ear. If the nodes are persistently enlarged, then one should be excised by an ENT surgeon and sent for pathology. A neck CT scan can also help.

Go to ER/Urgent care: Could be pharyngitis, mono, tonsillitis. May swab for throat for strep, may need antibiotic and throat culture.

"Normal" is relative: in cases like this.  It's "normal" for lymph nodes to be tender &amp; swollen when they're trying to keep a localized infection from entering the blood stream.    However, the underlying cause probably isn't "normal".  Neither is it "normal" to have persistent symptoms 3 weeks after having the flu.  Please seek medical attention.  Dr. Anne.
