Many possibilities: There are many different things that could cause your iron to be low. The most common is bleeding. You said you have no periods due to mirena, (levonorgestrel) but have you been checked for things like stomach/intestinal bleeding, ulcers, etc.?  If not, that would be my next suggestion.  If you haven't seen a doctor yet, you absolutely should asap, especially if you're taking the iron without a physician's advice.

Need to see a doctor: There are many causes of anemia (once it is ruled out that menstrual losses are the cause): and some can be serious. Bleeding in the intestinal tract; kidney disease; disorders of the red blood cells, or of the blood marrow, but anemia in a woman who does not menstruate really needs to be evaluated by a doctor to make sure nothing dangerous to your health is occurring.

PCOS: Menstrual flow varies quite a bit from woman to woman, so it is hard to say what normal should be. I would suggest seeing your doctor, and having them check your blood count. That will determine whether your bone marrow is able to replace the blood you lose with each cycle, and also indicate if you are low on iron or not. Even with PCOS, it is unusual for intermittent menses to cause significant anemia.

Maybe: The first step is to find out why the periods are prolonged by a gyn md who may not only recommend iron rx but if there is pelvic pathology causing the prolonged periods suggest methods to resolve the problem rather than a "stopgap" measure such as period cessation.

Supplements: Both taking iron supplements and taking medication such as birth control, will help restore your iron levels and energy. You need to control the loss as well as replace what has been lost. Also, take iron with food and vitamin c to help with absorption and reduce GI side effects.

Appropriate: Treatment with IV iron is appropriate, however, you need to consult a doctor to get that. In the mean time you should take oral iron supplement with multivitamins and that may over a year or so restore your iron status.
