how can i taper off sertraline if i have been taking 25mg for three days then 50mg for 6 days?

Over 1-2 weeks: Setraline can usually be tapered off over 1-2 weeks depending upon how you feel when the dose is decreased. That is to decrease the current dose to one half for 1 week and then 1/4 for another week and then discontinue. Usually the minimum dose is 25 mg after which you can discontinue.Do not stop taking sertraline earlier than as recommended by your physician as your symptoms can rapidly come back.

is it normal to feel like emotions are a roller coaster when tapering off sertraline? i have a follow up with my doctor and will reach out as needed. im just wondering if it can be normal and can even out as the body adjusts?

: While it certainly can be "normal" to have this type of withdrawal symptoms,  listen to your body and emotions. Your tapering may be happening too quickly or it may not be the right time to come off the medicine yet. I  would certainly suggest you at least message your doctor or do a telehealth or video visit with them to let them know what you are experiencing,  so together you can plan anew!

Unexplained headache: One major symptom may be a headache that can last for several weeks upon stopping zoloft (sertraline) suddenly.  You are less likely to have symptoms when you gradually decrease zoloft (sertraline) over a few weeks as opposed to just stopping it cold turkey.

Stopping zoloft (sertraline): Ok to stop zoloft (sertraline) now if you are only at 25mg.  Always take your medications per your doctor's instructions.

5HTP: Take 200 mg of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) at bedtime, on an empty stomach.  5HTP is a precursor of serotonin, and will augment your body's supply of serotonin, which has been depleted by ten years of taking a selective serotonin receptor inhibitor (Zoloft).    It's important to take 5HTP on an empty stomach, because if it is mixed with food, it will form protein, instead of converting to serotonin

Why are you stopping: That seems reasonable. Tapering slowly off an SSRI should decrease withdrawal side effects. What are the side effects you are having that make you want to get off entirely? You've only been on since August so depending on the reason why you may not want to go off all together to avoid a relapse.

Sleep hormones: Melotonin is the hormone that in animals is involved in the initiation of sleep and in regulating  the sleep/ wake cycle. Some people have found that taking melatonin before bed is useful as a sleep aid. Speak to your doctor  about whether melatonin may work for you and others ways to improve sleep including sleep hygiene and non medication interventions. Good luck and good night.

Ask your doctor: 12.5 mg of Zoloft (sertraline) is a really small dose already, so I'm guessing that maybe your doctor wanted to start you on a low dose and gradually adjust it as needed to control your symptoms. You should never ask a friend or look on the internet (even if it's a MD you're talking to) when it comes to discontinuing medication. It is important that you keep your doctor in the loop in regards to meds!
