Try to start out : With "slender" or "light" tampon with one of rounded, plastic insertion tubes to see if that works better for you.

Change in menses: If your current menstrual periods are 28-34 days apart, and pregnancy is not a concern, this may just be a normal variation for you.  If you are referring to only bleeding, and it is possible for pregnancy, see your gyn provider for an exam and a serum HCG test, as early ectopic pregnancies may have bleeding associated , which should be addressed immediately.

Menstrual bleeding: This sounds like quite a bit of bleeding. It also sounds like this is new for you - that you are not used to having to change this much? I would have some blood work checked and then discuss treatments for excessive bleeding with your gynecologist if all blood work normal.

Swelling: When your tampon is full, the vagina (which is made of elastic tissue) is stretching and the stretch receptors in the vagina can cause cramping and an achy type of pain.  While this is common, it is annoying.  There's no harm that you're doing, rather it's just a sign that you need to change the tampon.  Hope that helps!

is it bad to have left my tampon in for 12 to 14 hours because i had a light period and no cramps?

Likely not: While tampons left in for long periods of time can increase your risk of toxic shock syndrome (fever, chills, severe infection) I have never seen a case in my career.  If your period is that light, you might want to consider using a mini-pad?  Likely many women have done what you describe with no problem, but you may want to consider changing your method.
