First : First of all make sure he has his blood pressure checked on three separate occasions in a doctors office or by a medical professional. If his systolic is elevated all three times (between 130-140) then he should try a 3 month trial of diet (low sodium) and a exercise routine. However, depending on his history and physical exam findings his doctor may want to start him on medications or find secondary causes of high blood pressure. He should be under the care of a doctor for this problem so it can be monitored and treated effectively.

Above 140mmHg: Assuming the patient is in otherwise good health and can tolerate treatment. The patient would benefit from treating levels consistently above 140 mmhg.
