Also, advanced cts can cause grip and thumb weakness.  Some patients will be awakened by the pain at night and note pain as far up the arm as the shoulder.

The diagnosis is made clinically with history and physical exam, which reproduces the symptoms during provocative maneuvers.  A nerve test, called an EMG can be used to confirm the diagnosis.
