Swelling, pain ...: Root canal is usually a localized infection but can become systemic.  Symptoms of a systemic infection include pain, swelling, fever, loss of function and redness.  If your symptoms from the emergency have subsided healing is probably occurring.  I would be best to revisit your dentist to check your progress.

The procedure : Should be relatively painless. Soreness after root canal therapy (and after anesthesia has resolved) is frequent but usually mild and short term.  Pain medications will help. Society has developed a mind set that root canals are painful and the misconception is difficult to conquer!  let your dentist explain the process and help moderate any concern you have with the anticipation of pain. Not much: Don't believe what other people tell you.  I have so many patients that tell me after i had performed the procedures that they have absolutely no pain.  Make sure you find someone that can work with your pain tolerance and are sensitive to your need.  For patients that are extremely anxious I use oral sedation as an adjunct. Talk to your dentist and obtain a referral to an endodontist if warranted.

Inflammed or infecte: Also may mean sensitivity to heat or cold, which is indicative of a possible root canal problem. Several previous answers on this topic should be reviewed.

Really doesn't hurt: Root canal therapy is completed with local anesthesia.. During the procedure you do not feel anything. After the anesthesia wears off, there is usually some soreness for a day. Otc pain meds take care of the pain, if any.

ZERO: You will be given a local anesthetic to completely numb the tooth and you should not feel anything.

Cannot Be "Allergic": You cannot be allergic to a root canal.  You can be allergic to one, or some, of the medications used for the procedure.  If you have concerns, please speak with your dentist and tell them what you are allergic to, if unsure have an allergen test done for a complete panel of potential allergens.  The dentist will then inform you if any of your allergens are used in the root canal procedure.

Bad odor: If you smelled a bad odor coming from your tooth during treatment it is probably infected, and that is why it had a bad smell.

Yes: If you really need that amount of treatment at 19, you've ignored you dental health for a long time. You need to eat healthy foods, avoid sugary drinks and snacks, brush and floss, and visit your dentist regularly. These are the last teeth you will have that are not artificial... Try to take care of them.
