Go to the ER: Could be from the allergic response to the sting or an infection. Need to be evaluated asap. Please go to the er. Infections over joints is very serious.

Could be normal: It is typical for a wasp sting to become red and swollen and hurt. However if the pain,redness and swelling is becoming worse after four days rather than better you could be developing an infection and should be seen by a physician

Wasp Sting: Remove stinger by scraping along edge of skin with credit card. Clean area with soap ; warm water. Apply ice in 10 min. Increments; alternating 10 on ; 10 off. You can take tylenol, (acetaminophen) Aspirin or Motrin for pain or Benadryl for swelling. Make a paste of 2 parts baking soda ; 1 part water ; apply. Or you can apply a meat tenderizer poultice to the area. Throat, airway, mouth swelling? Call 911!

Supportive care: Swelling and redness solely around the sting is also known as a large local reaction.  Cold compresses, topical steroid creams, and oral antihistamines such as zyrtec or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be helpful.  Depending on the extent of the swelling, some patients require prednisone.

Keep calm : Apply warm compresses for the pain and swelling about 3-4 times a day for about 20 minutes each time . May also take ibuprofen for pain and swelling . Things should be getting better in a few days . If it is becoming more painful , continues to swell , you have any purulent discharge , decrease sensation, finger turn blue/purple , cold or clammy , then you must see a doctor immediately

Wasp sting: Apply cold compresses to the bite. You can also apply meat tenderizer to the sting. The enzymes in the tenderizer will help alleviate the sting.

Sting injury: The good news is that this is not consistent with an allergic reaction to the sting.  If the swelling is simply from local irritation from the venom: then ice, keep elevated, and use Nsaid (if no contraindications).  However, the delay in swelling raises concern for skin infection (bacteria living on skin can enter along with the stinger). A delay in treating an infection could put joints at risk

Wasp stings: This is a usual reaction.  Apply ice.  Apply benadryl (diphenhydramine) cream. Apply steroid cream.

Not unexpected: The venom of insect often sensitizes people so that most end up becoming allergic to it. Your initial response was to the chemicals present in the venom and the late response was likely from the allergic response to it.  Try antihistamine and topical cortisone.
