Could be: Swelling is definitely normal following a surgery, and gravity will tend to force the swelling into your foot.  However, if this is new just within the past few days and there is associated pain, it could be a symptom of the formation of a blood clot in your leg. Varies: There are multiple possibilities, but one general way to look at it is either there is something wrong with the knee replacement surgery outcome, or your mother has another condition causing pain in that area.  The most common "other" cause is a condition calked spinal stenosis, which is essentially a pinched nerve in the back that can cause leg pain and numbness.

Maybe: depends how far post op you are. if there is any pain get checked out. especially calf. wear support hose and take asa when flying.

It is old blood: It appears to be old blood seeping through skin but should see your doctor to eliminate any other problem including infection at the site etc.

Yes and No: Early  in the recovery it is not unusual to have swelling from the knee down into the ankle and foot. With healing proper circulation is reestablished and usually the swelling returns to a more normal state. Ice, elevation, and compression and education may help but if the swelling persist too long more aggressive treatment may be needed.

A few thoughts: Swollen ankle could be due to surg., infection, lymphatic stasis, etc.If tiny blisters-could be Zoster.Poss. poor circulation or nerve injury due to knee surgery.Restless legs often mean circulation prob. or nerve inflammation in lower leg.Physical exam is imperative.If no other cause found, inflammed nerve should be considered.Treatment could incl osteopathic manipulaiton neuroprolotherapy, etc.

Yes: It takes several months but eventually swelling after total joint replacement does subside and, if the surgery was done well, the knee feels better than ever. Of course in the early postoperative period, the first few months, i would also be concerned about the development of blood clots. Any significant swelling of the extremity should immediately constipation to report to the emergency room for a lower extremity ultrasound to rule out any clots in the leg. These can be life-threatening.
