what does a sonogram on a swollen lymph node show?

It depends: It depends on why the lymph node is swollen.  Enlargement can be from the body's reaction to infection or inflammation, sometimes an abscess can form inside a lymph node.  Cancer can also spread through lymph nodes.  Typically, unless the lymph node is biopsied the exact cause of the enlargement is not 100% certain.  Remember, it is normal to have enlarged lymph nodes from time to time.

Depends: General lymph node enlargement  without other symptoms is difficult to diagnose. I would get checked out so that someone could perform the full exam.

Nothing unless they: Unless the lymph glands are getting bigger, you do not need to do anything further. if the lymph nodes are getting bigger, then you need to go see your doctor again.

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria, viruses, cancers, etc.  When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

Bothering you? Mammo: 1st, perform (&amp; have doctors perform) serial breast examinations (BSE). Breast health's important, since breast cancer can often present as an enlarged armpit lymph node. 2nd, get mammograms every 2 yrs. It's an  accepted screening tool by USPSTF. 3rd, if it bothers you for other reasons (size change, tenderness, clothing), talk to a surgeon about removal &amp; biopsy. It's the only way to know 4 sure

Hidradenitis or can: Armpit lumps and lymph node enlargement can be due to sweat gland inflammation, called hidradenitis, but there is concern for possible breast disease.  Please have a surgeon perform a breast exam and obtain a mammogram.
