Punching what: If you punched something hard did you break anything?  Might need an examination and possible x-ray.
If a soft puching bag take some tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen, the swelling and inflammation should be gone by morning.

Hand arthritis: Need to get xray of the hand and some blood work to rule out rheumatological/connective tissue disorder and also to rule out an infection if accompanied by redness and any fevers.

It takes time: Did you injure  your hand?  Swelling can last for a variable period of time depending on if it is broken or sprained and exactly what the injury is.  Between 1-3 weeks would not be unusual.  You can apply an ace wrap, apply ice to the area (20 minutes on/20 minutes off), and elevate above heart level to help with the swelling.  You will need to have an x-ray done to determine if it is broken.

woke up with swollen top knuckle on pinky.  went to bed fine (no trauma prior to sleeping).  what could have caused this?  sleeping on it?

Probably: Sleeping on the finger could have caused the symptoms you experienced. It should be gone by now. If it does not go away in a few hours, it would warrant an examination.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

the knuckle to the tip of my index finger is tingly and knuckle is very sore to touch.. a little swollen but have had no trauma to it?

Finger arthritis: This sounds like acute arthritis. Is it red? This could be gout, but is not typical; could be beginning of an arthritis syndrome, such as RA, but also unusual. Could be an infectious reaction to something you have encountered, but also not typical; any strain from overuse?

See a Dr.: One sided swelling of any extremity can be indicative of an underlying problem. (infection, vascular problem, lymphatic blockage, Thrombosis) You should take your child to see her Dr. A thorough history and exam can provide insight as to what the underlying cause could be and treatment. Unilateral swelling is not caused by cold weather.
