Elevation: You dad is in a difficult position and he has my sympathies.  Lung disease can be difficult.  He should speak to his physician to see if diuretics might help, but in th meantime, he can elevate his legs to help minimize the fluid retention.

i'm on seasonique since i have endo. been on it for years and my legs are so swollen from water retention. would it be ok to routinely takewater pill?

Accepted Answer

No: Before starting a diuretic, you need to be evaluated for other causes: kidney or  liver dysfunction, low thyroid, blood clots in the legs  (which is a risk for estrogens).  Before starting a diuretic for any reason, you need your potassium checked.

See your physician: This could be due to high blood pressure, kidney disorders, heart problems, or poor valve function in your veins.  I would recommend seeing your primary care physician first and getting a complete check up.

Clotting?: It sounds as if your partner needs appropriate compression garments to reduce edema and swelling but this is best for venous stasis and not necessarily for arterial insufficency. I would be concerned about varicose veins as well as a potential blood clot(s). A peripheral pulse exam and possible ultrasound imaging may be necessary to evaluate possible etiologies.

Venous insufficiency: The commonest cause is inadequacy of the tiny valves that in the veins of your lower legs allowing gravity to push fluid into the interstitial spaces of your legs when you're on your feet. Elevation and support stockings can be helpful. Do you leave an indentation in your skin when you press down on it? If not, you may not really have swelling at all. Many people think they do but, not really!

There : There are certainly other drugs that work like Lasix (furosemide) and that are much stronger/potent. You should talk to your doctor about alternatives, but of course, you must keep in mind your overall health condition and what you can or can't handle for example due to heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure..... In any event, you should record and limit your fluid intake daily based on your doctor's assessment. And finally, don't forget to elevate your legs as much as possible and wear the support stockings.

Before you do that: recommend that you let the treating medical provider know. Maybe you need a higher dose of the medication or a different medication. Possibly a more extensive evaluation.

Swelling: At 30i wouldn't be concerned by vascular problems. Is there a pattern that occurs with the swelling.

Causes: Veinous insufficiency, lymphedema, congestive heart failure, kidney disease are some.

Accepted Answer

Maybe!: A ivc filter should not increase lower extremity pressure, but it can.  Check with your surgeon! most likely to occur if other venous issues are present, or in woemn vs. Men.
