Usually weeks: Depending on how bad the injury, it can take weeks, or even longer. Especially as we get older, our risk for muscle injuries and the time it takes to recover both increase. Physical therapy is definitely helpful, as is resting and avoiding activities that make it hurt more. Good luck.

Need to be checked: Painfull swelling is often caused by an infectious process. In your arm pit/ axilla it could be a benign (non cancerous) lesion like lymphnodes, cysts of the skin, fatty tumors and developing abscess from an infection. It also could be a cancerous lesion. If this is not resolving within a few days you must have your doctor check this out.

Swollen lymph node(s) are usually a sign that the body is taking care of itself and not reason for concern.  In very rare cases, a swollen node may be a sign of a more serious condition. If it persists, get it checked out
