Yes: People can experience hives in the sun called solar urticaria. There are also a variety of different rashes triggered by sun exposure. Certain medicines predispose people to developing rashes in the sun. See a dermatologist or allergist for proper diagnosis and management.

Meds and fruits: There are a number of medications (usually antibiotics) that if taken and then a person is exposed to sunshine (uva), they develop a photo-allergic or photo-toxic rash.  This can also be seen after handling fresh limes in the sunshine.  After applying topical nsaids or even some sunscreens, a photo allergic contact dermatitis can occur.  A dermatologist can easily assess these.

Yes: Yes, some people are truly allergic to sunlight. Certain wavelengths of sunlight trigger hives, or welts, in their skin at points of exposure.  Certainly there are other forms of sun related problems as well including sun poisoning, heat exhaustion and sunburn.

Sun light allergy: It is a rare condition of getting an allergic reaction to sun light. Depending on the wave length of the light, e.g. Allergic to toward the lager infra-red wave length or to the smaller ultraviolet wave length, you might develop the same symptoms when you use the bed tan. Be tan is uv light.

Under Supervision: Solar urticaria is rare and presents as itchy red hives that appear within 5-10 minutes of sun exposure and resolve within 24 hours. Phototesting by an Allergist can confirm diagnosis.  Certain medications or photodesensitization under supervision with low-dose PUVA or narrowband UVB initially given with oral steroids is usually required for management. No: You should use one without ingredients that sensitize the skin, vanicream has a good sunscreen that is safe, it is available over the counter.

i have a sun allergy called pmle and am looking to prevent it before my vacation to florida. is there anything oral or topical besides spf?

Accepted Answer

PMLE: Full spectrum sunscreen, preferably a chemical free one that contains micronized zinc oxide and micronized titanium dioxide will block the rays   also sun protective clothing should be used. People who are allergic to poison ivy will break out on a rash every time they rub it on their skin.   Pmle will act the same way in people who have it. You could be tested to see what wavelength affects you.

Solar Allergy: There is solar urticaria (hives) and photosensitive dermatitis (sun rash) and both are treated differently, though usually with topical preparations.

Accepted Answer

Maybe: Depends what you develop in the sun, you should always put on sunblock lotion that is water resistant in your case and you need to stay in the shade. Of these measures don't help, you may need to change jobs. You need to know what you are sensitive to the sun, consult an allergist.

SPF: Try using a powerful sun block with a high spf, as we should all avoid the sun when it comes to our skin, and the future risk of skin cancer.  With that being said, if you still have issues, than see a skin dr. (dermatologist).  Good luck to you.
