is there a difference between sulfa and sulfur medications?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Many people have taken "sulfa" drugs (usually an antibiotic) and have had allergic reactions to them (usually hives).  This does not mean they are allergic to all medications containing the element "sulfur."  for example, you may be allergic to sulfamethoxazole (an antibiotic) but not to hydrochlorothiazide (a sulfur containing high blood pressure medication).

sulfur smell when i go to restroom. anything to worry about? i can't think of anything that's changed recently (diet/medication-wise).

Urine Odor: A variety of things can alter the smell of your urine.  The characteristic sulfur smell is attributable to certain foods such as apsaragus among others.  So if you are eating more veggies than normal this is probably the cause.  However, there could be other causes such as an infection.  So if your urine is also funny looking and u are experience bladder discomfort, see your doctor.

No : Sulfa based medications are in a separate class from doxycycline.   There should be no increased risk based on a sulfa allergy.

Need : Need more information. Are you on any other drugs? Have you had any other exposures? Would consult a dermatologist first.

i was on cephalexin for a uti. the culture came back with a resistant bacteria. so they changed me to augmentin. i cant take sulfur based drugs. will the augmentin help? thanks?

: Augmentin is not sulfa based and if picked on actual sensitivity should work just fine. Antibiotic resistance remains of concern in the long run and further work up might be needed in order to discover possible causes for your recurrent UTI’s.

Pharmacist: I think your pharmacist can be very helpful in answering this question and any other questions concerning your medications or supplements. I don't believe that sulfates are in the same category as sulfonamides, but check this out with your pharmacist.

Not to worry: People often confuse sulfa with sulfate and sulfite.  They sound similar but not really closely related in term of human biologic response.

See your Doctor: If one suspects a drug allergy then see pcp or allergists to review the drug in question and the reaction that occurred. If the clinical history suggests a potential drug allergy then skin testing may be performed to conform this. Occasionally, an oral challenge may be done as well.

i spilled dilute sulfuric acid on myself, is this dangerous?

Wash it off: right away. Neutralize the remaining acid on your skin with a paste of baking sofa and water. If the burn appears serious go to the ER at your local hospital. If not, wash and dry the area and apply Neomycin cream to prevent infection. Cover the area loosely and keep it clean.
