i have had allergic reactions to sulfa (stevens-johnson syndrome) and nsaids (swelling of face lips, and tongue).  can i safely take meloxicam for oa?

Likely ok: Reaction to NSAIDs other than asthma, nasal congestion , sinusitis is considered specific to that drug. Sulfa has nothing to do with meloxicam. Thus it is likely safe for you to take Meloxicam but try to stay at 7.5 mg per day.

had an allergic reaction to sulfa. with the shot and meds the dr gave me, the rash is looking better. how long will it take it to go away completely?

Usually days: In rare instances, weeks, please avoid prolonged sun exposure till the rash disappears completely, tell every healthcare worker you deal with that you have allergy to sulpha till sorted out, it will be written on your medical record

i took sulfa for two weeks ending three days ago and i strayed breaking out in hives yesterday. could this be an allergic reaction?

Sulfa allergy: Yes, it is possible to experience an allergic response a few days after completing a course of sulfa. Please notify the prescribing practitioner without delay. Take benadryl (diphenhydramine) 25 mg every 4 hours for four doses. Then see how it is.

Not the same thing: They sound the same, but are not the same thing.  Your pharmacist would not have given you the medication if that were the case.

Sulfa allergy: Allergic reactions to sulfa are fairly common.  If a person develops a rash while taking a sulfa based medication, then it is likely the sulfa is to blame.  Unfortunately, there is no blood test or allergy skin test to confirm sulfa allergy.

Possible: If that is a new medication for you, it is possible you are having a serious reaction to it. With that 102.5 fever, i would advise you seek medical attention now.

Go to the er: There can be a very severe reaction that is a skin emergency. The most significant variant is called toxic epidermal necrolysis (ten). Another slightly less severe condition but on the same continuum is stevens-johnson syndrome.  It is important with your current symptoms you get evaluated asap.  The most common cause of both of these is drug reactions.

Yes and No: Allergies to specific triggers, like peanuts, shrimp, dust mites, etc., are not inherited from one generation to the next. However, the general state of "being allergic" (atopy) can be hereditary, so children of parents with asthma or seasonal allergies may have increased risk to develop those or other allergic conditions. are allergic reactions always immediate?

Depends: An allergic reaction usually occurs within 20 mins after exposure to an inhaled allergen but it may occur as late as 2 hrs with food allergy and 6-8 hrs with red meat allergy. For allergic skin reactions, it is usually from a different immune mechanism when the contact is on the skin. The reaction may not develop until 1-3 days after the exposure (poison ivy is one such example).
