Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold virus (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly, mainly to see if antibiotics like amoxicillin are needed. Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can decrease pain temporarily.

Ear infection?: An ear infection can cause pain in the throat and vice versa. Symptomatic care for the ear and throat pain can be helpful. You might see your doc for an evaluation if this doesn't get better in a few days.

i have a mild sore throat that hurts only when i swallow. it also affects my ear. but both the sore throat and the ear pain are only on one side. i had a cold a couple of weeks ago and i still have a cough from that. what could this be?

Sinus infection?: cold symptoms for more than about 10-14 days may indicate a sinus infection or ear infection. The pain on one side could also be from an infected lymph node or tonsillar infection. If you have fever, see a doctor today. Otherwise call your doc and have them check you out.

a week ago had covid booster pfizer. left ear hurts and neck glands the same side swollen and hurts. no fever. but also ongoing neck pain. how long until i should see a doctor? likely to heal on its own?

: Most COVID-19 vaccination reactions occur within 3 days after administration. An infection is another likely possibility. Monitor your temperature and a warm compress may provide relief.

Treating your allergies properly with avoidance measures and medications usually resolves these symptoms. For acute pain have ear examined to rule out infection. See an Allergist in order to diagnose your allergen sensitivities and maximize your medication regimen so that you feel better.

Throat pain will commonly refer to the ear. You can take OTC analgesics, do warm salt water gargles, and observe for a few days. If it gets worse with other symptoms, see your doctor.

Pharyngitis: Most times, acute pharyngitis (infection of the back of the throat) are caused by viruses or bacteria.  Symptoms of these infections include, but are not limited to:  1)  sore throat, 2) runny nose, 3) cough, 4) sinus pressure, 5) otalgia (ear pain), 6) fever, 7) fatigue, 8) neck discomfort.  Best to give it time and push the fluids!  if not improving then you need to see a medical provider!
