Breast abscess ?: If the diagnosis is a confirmed abscess, simple local anesthesia to "numb" the skin incision, and placing a drain to prevent new collection of abscess fluid (pus) takes only a few minutes.  It is an outpatient procedure, with few complications unless the drain falls out prior to healing, and a recurrent abscess forms.

Yes: More common in lactating women, but principle of treatment is like any other abcess. You have to drain the pus by making a small incision into the abcess cavity, and let it heal from the inside out. Problem with a lactating breast is a risk of a milk fistula-where milk would leak from the incision rather than be expressed from the nipple.

No, but it happens. : Breast abscesses can occur at any age, typically via normal skin bacteria entering a break in the skin or nipple. Rx centers on antibiotics and draining any pus, ideally via (repeated) aspirations rather than surgical drainage. Surgical evaluation is mandatory--it is best to treat this as early as possible.

Need  MD Evaluation: Common features of breast abscesses & mastitis include swelling and redness of the breast; however, an abscess is often associated with a new, tender, progressively-enlarging lump.  The distinction may be subtle, requiring surgical evaluation +/- ultrasound.

ABX,Aspiration,I & D: Breast abscesses usually cause a red, swollen, tender lump.  Associated symptoms may include fever, malaise, and lethargy.  While more common when breastfeeding, they can occur at any age.  The cornerstone of therapy includes antibiotics and drainage, which may be done via needle aspiration or surgical "i and d", depending on the severity of the infection.

If treated....: If your abscess is treated appropriately with drainage and antibiotics, the fever should resolve within 48-72 hours.  If the fever persists, then contact your surgeon, the abscess may not have been completely drained (can happen with a complex abscess) or you may need a different antibiotic.

2 days: With current photometric monitoring of blood cultures, most real positive cultures are identified by 24 hours of incubation, and virtually all by 48 hours. Blood cultures positive after 48 hours of incubation must be viewed a possible contaminants if drawn from a venipuncture (but not from a central line).

Need followup: You should go back to your doctor for followup.  You may need additional antibiotics or surgery.
