been having dry mouth when waking up, stuffy nose and mucus that doesnt seem to go away. its been almost over a month, coughing up chunky phlegm sometimes and i feel relieved. my voice gets hoarse though out the day. been taking benalyn and it help?

: Dry mouth is probably from mouth breathing when sleeping. You sound dehydrated. Drink at least two quarts of clear fluids a day. Sounds like you have exposure to allergens or airway irritants. DC smoking and alcohol. No throat clearing, Suck on lozenges to stimulate salivary glands. You may have acid reflux disease. Could try Prilosec and eating habit modifications

Allergies and GERD: There are several conditions that can cause similar symptoms; allergies with postnasal drip, acid reflux or heartburn affecting the throat, viral uris or other bacterial infections. Since it had been present for 2 months, i would recommend evaluation by a physician.

Viral: Most times these are signs of a viral respiratory illness. Unfortunately there is no cure for a virus. It needs to run it's course. The old saying is it lasts 7 days if you treat it, a week if you don't. Worrisome signs would be chest pain, shortness of breath with activity, high fevers or vomiting.

How long?: If these are from a cold, then a few days of topical nasal decongestant spray may work the best. If these are recurrent or persistent problems, then you need to consult an allergist to find out if you are allergic or whether you have asthma. The cause of the condition dictates the type of treatment.

Flu: Warm steam will decongest the nasal mucosa and help relieve the ear and face pressure; however, the effect is temporary. You can try OTC decongestants and cough suppressants etc. after you check with your doctor regarding the safety of such medications given your pregnancy.

Respiratory Virus: You are describing typical symptoms for an upper respiratory tract infection. Your ear symptoms can be caused by eustachian tube dysfunction where the opening to the tube in the back of your throat is irritated and swollen and prevents you from equalizing the pressure in your ears. Try decongestants and nasal saline irrigation. These viruses can last a week to 10 days.

Viral URI: The mucus lining of the eye and of the nose and throat can be simultaneously infected by a virus at the same time.  The usual treatments you might take for a cold are in order here.  Keep the eyes clean with warm moist cloths but unless the vision is significantly disturbed or the eyes start to become painful, you can probably let this run its course.

: There is no miracle cure for the common cold. You need to rest, stay hyrdated, have plenty of tissues, eat some comfort food, and treat the symptoms. We have an old Scottish treatment its called a toddy, honey, lemon, hot water and a shot of reasonable Scotch Whisky. May I be forgiven for sugesting such a thing. It certainly changes your attitude!
