No other disease?: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber-with-water, polyethylene glycol, Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... A doctor can evaluate and maybe prescribe helpful medicines too.

Diet, fluid, other?: For some people normal bowel habit is not daily-how they are built, so to speak.  For many, it can be low fiber, inadequate fluids, inactivity, low oil/fat intake (lubricates bowels).
Can be med effects, low thyroid, other metabolic/hormone  issues, anatomical abnormalities of gut, gyn organs, kidney issues, depression, irritable bowel, etc..  Most serious can be cancer, esp if new

Constipation: The population does tend to-be fixated on bowel movements. Up to every three days is considered normal as long as not painful. The differential diagnosis for constipation is extensive including dehydration, inadequate fiber,  medications including agents such as codeine.

Enemas next: By 5 days, there is a high likelihood of a fecal impact ion. Without trying to loosen that up first, taking anything orally may not work. Try an enema 1st followed by some oral stimulant laxative like senekot or dulcolax.  Magnesium citrate as a last resort before seeing your doctor. Good luck.

Constipation: There are a lot of different things that can cause this: 
medications like narcotics, metabolic problems like diabetes and hypothyroidism, problems with the colon itself like a blockage, or dead bowel, neuromuscular diseases like multiple sclerosis, stroke or parkinson's. This is by no means a complete list. Please see your doctor.

Increase fiber/fluid: Take more fiber and increase your fluid intake. Raisins can help, fruits/veggies have higher fiber content which helps absorb fluids and promote better bm's. Increasing water is important as well so there is enough fluid for the fiber to absorb. Probiotics are wonderful sources to promote gut health and provide better consistency of bm's too. Yogurt, etc.

Try an enema: By 7 days, there is a lot of stool in the colon. Taking oral laxatives just packs in more stool towards the rectum. You need to break that up with an enema or two. Please go see a doctor for this.

OTC laxatives: There could be a number of things going and you need to be evaluated by a gastroenterologist. If you have no abdominal pain, fever, bleeding from rectum and symptoms are chronic, you should start with fiber supplement and stool softners along with daily exercise and increase fluid intake. If you have any of the above, seek immediate medical attention.

It depends: There is tremendous variation between the number of bowel movements normal people have each week. The important thing is for you to know yourself - if you usually have a bm every day and now you haven't in 3 days that is significant. On the other hand if you usually only have 1 bm a week then missing a day or two is not a big deal. If it is abnormal for you and you are uncomfortable see a doc.
