As long as Paining: As long as you have pain, it usually lasts 2 to 5 days, but you can taper of one of the pain med as you get better.

Many causes: Strep throat can certainly cause irritation of surrounding tissues.   In addition, fever from strep can cause "cold sores"  (=oral herpes, which 98% of us have) in your lips, gums, mouth, throat, or even esophagus.  There are medications to help shorten the duration of the cold sores; see your doctor about this.  Warm salt water gargles (1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water; swish, gargle, spit) help.

Normal: Yes this is common. You might want to rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help reduce the bacteria is your mouth and it can also help promote healing of the canker sores.  It will definitely sting, but it helps stimulate healing.

That is why "cold sores" are called cold sores.  If you are prone to this. Ask your doctor for a herpes medication you can take immediately to prevent an outbreak! best!

A cold or viral URI usually doesn't cause fever, pus or enlarged painful lymph nodes.  Its not easy for even an experienced doctor to always know the difference so when in doubt we check a rapid strep test.
