Yes: Acutually that can occur. Try use of a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication) to reduce your pain.

Muscle/tendon: It sounds like you have strained a muscle or tendon. You can take some ibuprofen or aleve (naproxen) for the discomfort. It should resolve in a few weeks. If it is not resolving see your doctor.

Vague: Could be a number of causes- pulled muscle in back. rib/ribs out of place, a respiratory infection, etc.  Need a thorough history and exam

Rib cartilage: In a young healthy person localized pain in the chest wall is most commonly due to inflammation of the joint between the rob and sternum or the cartilage. Local ice packs or a counter irritant cream may help. The association of chest pain with exertion is always a red flag and warrants that you see a physician and be thoroughly examined.

at 16 i had shingles. three years later i still have stinging pain in one area in my lower back. i can also feel a small lump. is it just muscle spams?

Post herpetic: Shingles can go but leave pain for years afterward.  There could also be localized muscle spasm if the pain is intense enough.

Doctor can evaluate: A person with aches at the chest, rib cage, or left shoulder can see his doctor to be evaluated. Pains can come from a heart problem (serious!), neck and shoulder muscles, the ribs and their joints, the lungs inside the chest, etc... If one feels her pain is coming from the heart, has a chest tightness, some difficulty breathing, or has past heart disease, she can go to the E.R. by ambulance.

Possibly: Yes it could, but so could other more serious issues like a pinched nerve in the neck. Even if it is a muscle spasm, the more important question is what is the cause for e spasms. Are you over working them or is it compensatory response to a more serious injury in the neck.
Bottom line- go get checked out.
