Intercostal pain: Make sure its not related to a condition called ankylosing spondylitis which can affect ribs too. Have doctor check a test called 'HLA B27' especially if you have unusual spinal stiffness or a history of eye inflammation called iritis or conjunctivitis, usually in a single eye.

Sternal Spasms: Vigorous abdominal exercise can strain any of the muscles extending from the bottom of the sternum and ribs to the lower pelvic and pubic bones.  Spasm can occur anywhere in this large muscular region and present in many different ways.  Palpable tightness or pain is a common complaint.  Gentle stretching by arching upward while lying on the stomach (sphinx or cobra position) usually helps.

i have been getting these intermittent twinges of pain in my chest area by by breat and sternum area.  they only last a flash of a second and then gon?

Chest twinges: How old areyou? May be gastritis/ GERD which responds to ranitidine/ prevacid or gallbladder but could also be costcondritis, mycoplasma infection or the heart  pericarditis or cardiac ( though pain lasting  a second is not usual for heart). Could rarely be  lesion. Since there is concern for the heart would follow up with ER or urgent care today

COSTOCHONDRITIS: Syndrome...is quite common and may be your problem. A trial with heat packs and OTC NSAID (eg: Ibuprofen 600 mgm 4x per day. might help!

Reflux vs heart pain: Pain that is under the sternum only while eating is more likely to be from the esophagus or the stomach, than from the heart. A primary care doctor can evaluate and may begin treatment for acid reflux from the stomach into the esophagus. A gastroenterologist (stomach specialist) may do an endoscopy with a camera to take pictures and biopsy the area. A heart evaluation may still be needed.
