Not so much: There is hope that stem cells will someday be used to treat symptomatic degenerative discs; but herniated discs are different.  When your disc herniated, inflammatory cells migrate into the area and have the capability if resorting the herniated fragment approximately 80-90 percent if the time.  Stem cells have not been shown to improve that process at this point.

Stem cells & disc: There is great interest in developing techniques to restore spinal discs but other than pilot studes in animals, there are no fda approved studies using stem cells.  The intervertebral disc does not have any direct blood supply so the expectation that cells that are transplanted into the disc space will survive, is flawed.  Several mechanical devies have been researched but so far without approval.

Still experimental: This is currently being evaluated and no conclusions concerning effectiveness have been  reached.  There is active research being done in this field.

Stem cells : There are several promising studies and research projects that are working with stem cells to restore cartilage in joints such as hips, knees and discs in the spine. The first step to fda approval is to show safety, then efficacy. This process can take many years. Some studies in others countries may yeild results sooner.

No good data: There is a lot or research going into this area, however no good outcome studies yet.  Regenexx has a study going on for low back pain and degenerative disc disease but it is still ongoing.  Check out Regenexx.Com for more info.  Lastly, it will take awhile before this therapy has safety records and FDA studies enough for it to be an approved and covered treatment for people, probably 10 years.

my daughter, 17 years old, was diagnosed with juvenile disc degeneration.  i am interested in stem cell research.  what can i do to help her.  ?

See an immunologist: Stem cell research is by definition, a research science, and not available to everyone. I suggest you hunt around, do a bit of research, there are probably some folks at Univ of Minnesota that can at least respond to questions, but a hotbed of research is going on in California - there may be some answers for you at one of many university groups - look into the medical schools for answers

State of the art: We receive frequent inquiries about stem cells, but the research is not convincing or productive at this point.  In your case, we now have artificial disks, and platelet rich injections available, besides a series of nerve blocks, especially medial branch blocks, but I cannot advise what is best for you.  A neurosurgeon can help guide this.

Research ongoing: The use os stem cells in a variety of afflictions show promise.Most work with cardiomyopathy is in adults, and stem cell use appears to be helpful but not developed to a point where it is considered more than paliative. It may buy time until a transplant organ can be found, and would only be available in centers using a study protocol.
