Cheaper than infecti: Cheaper than dealing with the outcomes from the infection.  For instance - a pap smear looking for the outcomes of hpv - cancer or its precursors - may cost a couple hundred bucks.  Dealing with cancer costs 10's or 100's of thousands!  most insurances will cover the cost and if not, health depts and clinics offer low cost testing and care.

Yes,but: In some states you must agree i writing for HIV testing. Routine testing may exclude or include the test.I would just ask the staff.

No: State laws require that any facility, lab, or physician that gets a positive report of certain STDs report it to the state department of health.  Not doing so would be a criminal offense.  Std results are not reported to any individual person or organization though so they only people that would know are you, your doctor, the lab, your insurance (if used), & possibly the state health department.

It varies a lot: "Sexually active" can mean anything from mutually monogamous with one uninfected partner to multiple casual sex partners (perhaps without condoms) every week. The first doesn't need STD testing at all, the second as often as once a month. Sex of partners is important -- higher risk for gay men than straight men and women. For most hetersexual singles, every 6-12 months probably is about right.

Possible...: How long should one wait to collect urine for testing STD? There is no firm set rule, but it is sensible to wait for 2-4 hairs at least so to let the std-related germs produce enough amount of their metabolic residual for testing; of course, make sure to collect the first (dirty) part of urine, not the midstream. That is why the first part of morning urine is the best specimen for testing STD.

Stop Testing: If your physician has not prophylactically treated you with Azithromycin and A shot of Ceftriaxone regardless of the test results you need a new physician.  Any public health oriented or STD expert will remind you that these tests can be falsely negative. Any sexually active male with these symptoms needs to be treated.

Some: Some tests may be painful or uncomfortable such as genital swabs, cultures or blood draws. Others can be done on urine. It depends on what std we are looking for and in what situation.

Here are some ...: In the US, whatever approved by its FDA &amp; marketed is considered to be reasonably safe, effective, &amp; accurate although some frauds may still exist. But in comparison, that is best we can come by due to its highest transparency; of course, nothing is perfect and behind what we know always still hides a lot what we don't know. So, NAAT testing is good enough for daily use. More? Ask Doc timely.
