Plantar fasciitis: In my experience, heel spurs are most commonly seen in patients who have plantar fasciitis.  The area of the heel which develops the spur is the insertion point of the plantar fascia.  When you walk, the plantar fascia excessivelly pulls at the site of its insertion which causes a spur over time.  There's another condition which causes bone spurs all over the body but this is rare.

Neuroma: A neuroma is a thickening of the nerve due to repetetive trauma.  They typically remove the nerve that will cause some numbness, but the trade off is that the pain is gone.  These are almost always benign.

Lessen you dosage: Consult with your doctor.  The rx instructions indicate a reduction of dosage is in order under the guidance of your doctor. A pill splitter can cut the pills in half to give you half dose.  You can eliminate certain days a week to cut your overall dose.  I know a person that reduce their dose to taking only 5 mg once per week - approved by their doctor, and is doing well..

Rest, ice, NSAIDs: The heel spur is a sign that there is traction on the bone, but is rarely the cause of the pain. Plantar fasciitis is usually the culprit. Sudden increases in pain can be treated with rest, good supportive footwear, gel heel cups, ice massage, stretching of the calf muscles and anti-inflammatories (nsaids). All ot these can be done on your own. Of course, physicians can add many treatment measures.
