my daughter wants her belly button pierced, we made an appointment for this afternoon, then remembered we just had to treat a spot under her arm for a staph infection. the spot is completely dried up now. is it safe for her to be pierced today?

: Excellent question. She may be at increased risk for infection of the piercing site, because many people with staph skin infections have staph all over their skin. On the other hand, the actual risk probably is low. It's probably safe to go ahead, but with a close eye on the piercing site during the next week, and quick visit to the doctor if inflammation or pus appears at the site. Good luck.

Why Family Doctor: There is just way too much missing here for specific commentary.  We need the scan reports, blood test results, a description of the physical exam and the diagnoses.  But, that does not matter. This is the very reason you have a family physician. Your family doctor can interpret or explain anything missing or being misunderstood in your communications with the specialist.

See below: Without knowing the source of your staph infection it is difficult to say.  This could a side effect of the medication that you are on or could be  gastritis or an ulcer.  You have listed that you have been vomiting as well.  It would be wise to seek medical attention to evaluate this further.

STAPH Infection: Yes. It can be. But, it can also represent a need for surgery to drain the abscess. If you have any concerns, or if it is not changing you may want to discuss with your family doctor.

Symptoms clear: You will know when the original symptoms are clear and you finish your antibiotic course.  What exactly to look for depends on the source and location of the infection in question.

Yes: If a boil or abscess is present a specimen of the drainage or pus can be sent to the lab and a culture of the organisms is made. If staph aureus is grown on the culture then next it is grown on a culture with methicillin to see if the methicillin will inhibit growth of the staph. If growth not inhibited the staph aureus is methicillin .Resistant.

Umbilical infection: Keep it clean and dry.  Use Neosporin over the wound.  Keep your primary doctor in the loop.  If reddening gets worse.. Or fever...call your primary ASAP.

Antibiotics: Staph infections can grow quickly warm soaks help bring blood to the infection and keeping it clean as well using iodine as a topical agent. However if this is a true staph infection you will require oral antibiotics so see your MD
