Varies: My delivering hospitals have lists from Child and Family Services that point out individuals with open drug investigations. When they deliver, urine from mom and baby will usually be screened and in many cases the first baby stool will also be submitted for study. I do not routinely order drug studies on babies, but any prior history of maternal drug use may require screening for medical purposes.

Thalidomide was a: drug used for nausea in pregnancy in the 1959s and 69s but caused many birth defects such as absence of arms or legs.  It caused the drug industry to re evaluate its policy as to the reporting of side effects and problems with the drug.

Accepted Answer

Very: Drug testing is quite sensitive and highly specific.  Most labs run very sensitive screens to identify major classes of drugs then when they find a positive they run a highly specific gas chromatograph / mass spectrometer.  This test uniquely identifies the parent compound and its metabolites. If the sample chain of custody is good, there is only one explanation for a positive result.

my son has been taking concerta for years. his new school does hair drug testing. his came back positive, is this possible?

Depends...: On what drug was positive on the drug test.  Concerta would come up positive for amphetamines since it is an amphetamine.  Any other drug (ie marijuana, cocaine etc) would not come back postive from Concerta.

i am prescribed adderall xr and recently got a new job. and the drug testing company called me and said i was testing positive for amphetamine and also methamphetamine. i don't take street drugs and i am wondering if the adderall could cause this?

: Yes. Adderall is mixed forms of amphetamines. You should inform your workplace of its prescribed use.

Last trimester:: Meconium is preferred over urine for testing of neonates. Urine testing indicates drug use only over the last 1–10 days, depending on the drug. Meconium documents drug use over an extended period of time, covering at least the last trimester of pregnancy.

i just found out that i'm pregnant and i'm already at 8 months. since i found out i'm pregnant i have stopped using meth but prior to knowing this i was smoking it. will it show up in my baby at the time of birth if they drug test my newborn?

: Testing for drug exposure is not an automatic part of the evaluation at delivery. That said, if I have reason to suspect it, state law may require testing. If I look, I can find evidence of drug exposure in a newborn as far back as the 12th week of pregnancy.
