i have stabbing ear pain. it gets worse at night. is this normal?

TMJ: This could be the TMJ (temperomandibular joint). As you lay down, and turn to your side.. You're likely putting pressure on the joint.. Taking Motrin before bed might help but Motrin can disrupt sleep. An eval by your dentist or your local ENT may help as well.

See physician: Sudden onset of stabbing pain unlikely from an insect. Could be an ear infection or TMJ discomfort. Should have it examined.

having severe ear pain (4 days) deep inside & behind ear into neck. no drainage, sharp/stabbing pain, worse if laying down. what can i do for relief?

Throbbing pain: Migraine headache could be felt deep in your ear. If Ibuprofen and tylenol (acetaminophen) not helping, see your PCP for specific meds for migraine such as Fiorinal, Imetrex etc.

Could be ur sinuses: But you need to see your doctor, check out your blood pressure, maybe eye pressure too, could be migraine or cluster headache too, many possibilities, please see your doctor/a doctor soon

i have been having ear pain for about a week. my ear pain only occurs in my right ear. it feels like my ear is full, its a throbbing dull and aching pain with sometimes a sharp and stabbing pain. it feels sore around the outside of my ear. ?

Ear pain: With pain for a week in one ear, you need an otoscopic examination "looking in the ear". This could be an infection; this is most likely. It could also be impacted cerumen "ear wax" or a foreign body. I even had a patient who had an insect crawl into his ear while sleeping. Therefore see your doctor. Do not stick anything in your ear.  You can use OTC "sweet oil" drops for some relief until then.

had ear infection tht spread,  jaw cldnt open &  stabbing pain in head behind infected ear. pain in head has returned months later. shld i b concerned?

See you PCP: Always pay attention to a new or recurrent/worsening pain.  This could be a recurrent infection or mechanical damage from the previous infection.  Or maybe you are grinding your teeth at night.  A quick look in your ear and exam of the jaw and teeth should go a long way to ruling out these possibilities.  It is always better to have things evaluated early BEFORE they have a chance to spread.

i took a short nap.woke up with a sharp,  stabbing pain in my throat and tenderness in my ear.  pain is less sharp now,  but it still hurts to swallow?

Throat irritation: Your throat was irritated from any number of possibilities after your nap. You may have had a dry throat from mouth breathing or you are developing an infectious sore throat. Throat pain will commonly refer to the ear. You can take OTC analgesics, do warm salt water gargles, and observe for a few days. If it gets worse with other symptoms, see your doctor.

Outside of your ear.: Are you referring to the front of your ear?   A sudden, electric shock like pain in the face on one side may be due to a condition called trigeminal neuralgia.    There are treatments for this, and your physician can examine you and take a history to diagnose this.

i had grommets inserted when i was 5 three times and now as a adult i get sharp inner ear pain that usually last to a minute.  is this normal?

Not from the tubes: Very unlikely the ear pain you are getting has anything to do with the tubes you had as a child. Most like cause is strain of the tempromandibulr joint(tmj). Try motrin, soft diet for a week and don't chew gum, ice, etc.  Try to chew opposite the side that hurts. If this doesn't work, see your physician.

Middle ear effusion: This is more likely due to inflammation and allergy than an infection, but to cover both bases, I suggest an antibiotic and strong antihistamine at bedtime for 5-10 days for relief. This should be followed by skin or blood testing to find out your allergy triggers to avoid and reduce symptoms in the future
