Sour phlegm: Can be a sign of gastric acid reflux.  You are young to suspect a lung cancer but that or other lung disease like cystic fibrosis (you are little old for this) are other potential causes.

No: If you are having symptoms months after your tonsillectomy I do not think this has anything to do with your surgery. Double check with your ENT or PCP

Blood: Sometimes with a very forceful cough there can be specks of blood or actual amounts of blood in the phlegm.  Blood will have a typical metallic/iron taste.

Infection: If the phlegm is foul smelling or tasting it usually means there is infection. Coughing is away for your lungs to try and clear this material and help resolve the infection. Vast majority of infections are viral. Stay hydrated, using an expectorant like guaifenesin can be helpful in the mucus and make it easier to clear.if no improvement in 7 to 14 days, or worse, see your doctor

My perspective: As a dentist you may have some old failing fillings that as you cough may make you notice the metallic taste (assuming you have amalgam/silver fillings)  as far as what coming out of your lungs you may want to consult your md if this doesnt clear up quickly!

Side effect: The metallic taste may sometimes be a side effect of the antibiotics that are frequently used to treat the pneumonia. Hence the metallic taste may not have much to do with the phlegm itself.

Second hand smoke: Your exposure may be causing you to have chronic bronchitis and your lungs are clearing out the particulates you're inhaling. You could also have asthma and the phlegm is related to that. Ask the smokers to smoke outside and never in the car.

Not contagious: Bad breath is not contagious. The phlegm that tastes like this girl's breath may just be a manifestation of that unpleasant memory.
