how soon after taking it will the pain subside?
its been 2 days and its still uncomfortably painful
neck pain, back pain, ear ache, chest (esophagus) discomfort, throat pain when swallowing

can acid reflux cause your esophagus to be sore?

Yes: That is the most common symptom of reflux or gerd.  One can get chest pain, heartburn or just a feeling of soreness.  This is usually easily controlled by taking acid suppression medicine and avoiding foods and activites that can contribute to acid getting into the esophagus.

Maybe: Certain esophageal motility disorders such as esophageal spasm have been successfully treated with botox.  See a qualified gastroenterologist.

2 possibilities: Painless muscle spasm involving the crico-esophageal sphincter can be cause by high reflux of stomach acid, so called LPR (laryngo-pharyngeal reflux) or sometimes anxiety.  The bottom line is there is a cause for this muscle spasm.  You must find out whether or not you have reflux or is this a manifestation of muscle hyperactivity related to anxiety. These are two possibilities.

Swallowing trouble: The muscles that wrap around the esophagus, as well as the sphincters (both upper & lower) coordinate their contractions to produce peristalsis, thereby propelling food from the back of your mouth to the stomach, & keeping that food from backing up again. There are a lot of diseases that affect the esophagus muscles--some minor (presbyesophagus) & major (like achalasia, parkinson's, scleroderma).

Swallow'g difficult: The esophagus is a muscular tube whose function it is to move food into the stomach. When the muscle does not function properly swallowing can be difficult and food may accidentally find it's way into the windpipe. This causes reflexive coughing to get the food or fluid back into the esophagus.  If the food doesn't get cleared from the windpipe it can cause aspiration pneumonia.

Motility: The esophagus has a routine movement pattern that is designed to facilitate digestion. The manometry will evaluate if the esophagus is moving normally.

Sore throat: Most people do not need to see a doctor about a sore throat. It usually gets better on its own. But sore throat can sometimes be serious.
See a doctor or nurse if:
●You have a fever of at least 101°F or 38.4°C
●Your throat pain is severe within the first 2 days, or does not start to improve within 5 to 7 days
Go to the emergency room if:
●Have trouble breathing
●Drooling because you cannot swallow
