Completely different: Although both are known as muscle relaxants, Zanaflex (tizanidine) is really a muscle relaxant. It works by decreaseing spinal cord reflexes. Soma is actually more of a sedative even though it is prescribed as a muscle relaxant. They are different chemically and completely different in how they work.

Different meds: They are different medications. Both are listed as "muscle relaxants" but they are really both mild sedatives. One is an antihistamine and one metabolizes to a drug called Meprobamate which is a barbituate medication. As far as their effectiveness that is harder to say. One may work well for one person and the other may not work or cause side effects and vice versa. Not my favorite medications.

Soma: Soma is ranked as an L3 meaning if the benefits far outweigh the possible effects then it can be taken. What that means is that there are no published or that the published studies can not say if it is entirely safe to use in lactation.
