I grew up in LA and didn't know what a humidifier was until I moved to St. Louis, Missouri.  Get a humidifier.
If your nose is stuffy and you are breathing thru your mouth then you'll find yourself waking up with a sore throat, which goes away after being up awhile.

Mgt: You should be seen asap by your PCP and a pulmonary specialist. Cytologies and TB testing should be included when sampling airway secretions.

Acid : Acid reflux can most definitely cause a sore throat.  If you are routinely experiencing symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (gerd) such as:
- heartburn
- sore throat
- "lump in the throat" sensation or difficulty swallowing
- acidic or sour taste in your mouth
- dry cough
- hoarseness
 - regurgitation (wet burps)

it is important to discuss these symptoms with your doctor.  There are many antacid and acid blocker medications that can help alleviate your symptoms.

Virus: This is most likely a viral upper respiratory tract infection. A special diet is not mandatory but eating a light diet while running a fever is a good policy. Emphasize adequate fluid intake and tylenol (acetaminophen) and a soothing cough syrup like robitissinDM should help. Lozenges and/or gargles sooth the soreness in the throat.

Asthma: Your asthma is out of control, you should see your doctor to get a maintenance inhaler and see if you have an infection that needs to be treated. Ultimately you will need to see an allergist to determine your asthma triggers.

Cold : Sounds like the common cold, which is very "common" and a virus. No antibiotics for these. So, is it possible that ts something else?- yes- but common things commonly occur. Colds go with the help of good immune system support, like eating well and by keeping the hands clean.

Hard to know: You could have a strep pharyngitis, and can get a throat culture or strep test at an urgent care center since it's saturday.  You may also have a simple cold -- needing plenty of rest and fluids.  Salt-water gargles may help the throat pain, but since it's persistent it's best to get it checked out today.

Could be reflux: Silent acid reflux, which many folks have without symptoms, can prolong recovery from a sore throat.  Try staying away from caffeine and alcohol for a few days.  And if you smoke definitely stop that.
