what could be causing my increased tiredness? lately, i get extremely tired around 5pm for the rest of the night. i eat and drink ok, sleep ok..all for the most part. no matter what i try, i still feel that way?

: Fatigue has a lot of causes both physical and emotional. If you have not seen your doc, it would be a good time for a systems check. If you have, are you worried about anything?  If n9t be certain you get adequate sleep at night, eat healthy diet, and do exercise each day. Good luck

: A sleep disorder is one possible cause. Avoid fluids and eating , electronic devices,two hours or less before bedtime, and keep sleep environment clean and quiet.  If not improved, she should consult her physician. A virtual consultation with HT is available.

Various reasons: You may have anemia, or low thyroid, perhaps a chronic fatigue syndrome.  Also, a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea, may be present but not pinned down, (do you snore a lot?).  Suggest that your doctor and you work this out and find a solution.

Further testing: Feeling refreshed from sleep needs 2 things - quantity and quality. Eight to 9 hours is a good quantity, so the question becomes how good is the quality? Sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome are 2 things that can effect the quality of your sleep. An overnight sleep study will help to answer that question. Also proper sleep hygiene is important for good quality sleep.

Lethargy: Tough to say without examining you.  But sometimes just being 16, in a sport that is physically demanding, having homework, etc, and then actually getting a good 9 hours sleep, may actually cause you to have a rebound type fatigue.  Medical conditions are always possible if you have a thyroid condition, or are anemic, etc.

Need more: It can be as simple as you need more than 8 hours of sleep. This might be normal. Alternatively, you may have a medical / psychiatric condition that causes you to feel tired or increases your need for sleep. Some disorders (e.g. Depression, sleep apnea) causes sleep to be less restorative, less efficient. This will increase your need for longer sleep time.

QUALITY: Try for better quality of sleep.1. Maintain a regular bedtime and awakening time schedule including weekends. Get up about the same time every day, regardless of what time you fell asleep. 
2. Establish a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Relaxing rituals prior to bedtime many include a warm bath or shower, aroma therapy, reading, or listening to soothing music. 
3. Sleep in a room that is dark.>.

Prevention: Being tired all the time  may indicated sleep problems that can be life shortening or life threatening. If apnea is involved, oxygen desaturation during sleep puts tremedous stress on the major organs, particularly your brain and heart. The only way to know if there are serious problems is with an overnight sleep test. I encourage you to seek help.
