Hot tub fun: Some people get an almost allergic-like reaction from the heat and other chemicals in the hot tob.  The reaction can look like a flat, splotchy red rash and can itch.  Another rash that happens is really an infection called folliculitis.  You develop little bumps that may be full of pus at the base of each hair follicle.  It's red and can itch. Usually antibiotics are needed.  Happy hot tubbing!

Red bumps: Lots of little red bumps in the areas exposed to the hot tub water (ie: trunk, arms, legs). Showering after contact does not help prevent infection. Things that help are: continuous water filtration, frequent monitoring of disinfectant levels, frequent changing of water. The hot tub should be tested and treated by professionals for bacterial overgrowth.

To make a diagnosis, we need to know the shape of the rash, whether it itches, how long each individual lesion stays and if it leaves a scar when it resolves. Hot tub folliculitis usually looks like acne. In short, with a rash that stays that long, go either to your pmd or to a dermatogist.

Hot Tub Folliculitis: Hot tub folliculitis is an infection of the skin around the lower part of the hair shaft (hair follicles). It occurs when you come into contact with certain bacteria that live in warm, wet areas.
Hot tub folliculitis is caused by the bacteria pseudomonas aeruginosa. This form of bacteria survives in hot tubs, especially tubs made of wood. Controlling the acid and chlorine level prevents this.
